Explosion Claims Three Police Officers During Property Removal Operation in Italy
Three members of law enforcement perished and no fewer than 15 others were hurt in an apparently intentional blast caused by gas at a rural property in northern Italy.
Sequence of Events
The explosion took place as law enforcement and fire personnel entered the residence near Verona to carry out an court-ordered eviction for three siblings who were older adults.
All three officers killed served in the Carabinieri military police.
Investigation Developments
Two individuals were arrested at the scene and a third person who ran away following the incident was located shortly later. The trio have been taken to medical facility.
The detonation could be audible approximately 5 kilometers away and photographs from the area revealed the structure turned into a pile of rubble.
“We are in a period of mourning,” said the Minister of the Interior Minister Piantedosi, who added that previous tries had been made to displace the three family members in the past.
Financial Context
The head of the Veneto area, the regional head, stated the farmhouse was facing an eviction order due to financial obligations accrued by the siblings.
Mediators had been assigned to speak to the brothers and sister who had barricaded themselves into the property. When the officers came shortly after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), investigators believe one of the siblings triggered the detonation.
“As we went inside, we encountered a completely deranged action,” provincial police commander the police commander stated to news outlets.
“A gas cylinder had been ignited, and the blast directly hit our personnel,” he added.
Petrol bombs were also located at the property, the minister stated.
Impact Assessment
Injured individuals by the blast comprised 11 other members of the Carabinieri as well as three officers of Italy's state police and a fire services member.
As stated by the local prosecutor, the farmhouse was in a poor condition and had no electricity.
He believed the detonation had happened on a floor above the access point and told the press it was a “premeditated and voluntary homicide”. Shortly before the incident, he revealed officers had “heard a whistle, likely the gas cylinders being activated”.
Community Reaction
“All of us understood the scenario was critical,” neighbors informed reporters, noting that the trio had in the past stated to “cause an explosion” rather than vacate the property.
“The explosion had left a ‘terrible, very painful and dramatic toll’.”
Minister of Defence Minister Crosetto stood alongside other elected representatives in paying tribute to the three men who had died in the line of duty.
